London 2012

So I just saw the chosen official logo of the 2012 olympics. At first I hated it. Bad colors, bad shapes, ugh. But after looking at it for some time, the depth occured to me. The strange shapes spell out an abstract 2012 and also, if you look closer, form a stylised athlete, which is pretty neatly done.

But the purple and yellow still bugged me, until I learned the logo is going to be used in a wide variety of colors. So I guess I can live with it, even though most of the other reactions were negative.

Besides, the fact that the stylized man is a little less obvious this time and the fact that they, for once, avoided the cliche of using the olympic colors, is worth something too. Check out these logo's from previous and upcoming olympics. Cliché anyone?

Flow

This is a very simple, yet great and very addicting game. If you heard about the upcoming Will Wright game "Spore" and saw the demo-presentation. You'll find it has resemblances to the first stage of that game.

Part of the fun of the game is figuring out how it works. It's fairly simple and straightforward. Only pointer I'll give is that you have to eat the red-dot fish to go down a level and the blue-dot fish to go up a level.

Goal of the game? Have fun and grow as big as possible. When you beat the two largest fish on the deepest level you can start over as a jellyfish :D

Weird Al does it again.

Weird Al is at it again. He made a new cd filled with satirical songs, called 'Straight outta Lynwood' in a nod to 'straight outta Compton'. He even made the first song on the cd free for download. It's called 'Don't download this song'.

Hearing Range

How good is your hearing? We all know dogs can hear very high tones, tones a human ear can't hear anymore. That's how the dog whistle works.
But even among humans there are differences in hearing capabilities. Generally, the younger you are the higher tones you are able to hear. I found a blog with sound samples going from 10,000 Hz all the way up to 25,000Hz. I could hear the tones up to 20,000Hz, after that, I only heard silence, although 21k and 22k did gave me a headache-like feeling in the head. How high can you go? Let me know :)

North Korea trip

This are two interesting travel reports from 2 guys who went to North Korea. Since the country is pretty much blocked off from the rest of the world, getting in to it isn't that easy unless you go with a guided tourist group. And even then they won't let you out of their sight and make sure you only see what they want you to see. Still two interesting reports from a country of which little is known to most people. Simple home remedies

Have a look.

1. If you are choking on an ice cube, don't panic. Simply pour a cup of boiling water down your throat and presto! The blockage will be almost instantly removed.

How to clean your toilet using your cat

Got this in my email inbox, very funny :)

1) Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.
2) Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.
3) In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids. You may need to stand on the lid.
4)The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.

5)Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power-wash" and rinse".
6)Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.
7)Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.
8)The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off.
9)Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean.

Water balloon popping...in space!

Well, not exactly in space, but in the next best thing.
Did you ever wondered what would happen if you popped a water balloon in outer space? How the water would look like? What it would do?
Some NASA scientists asked themselves the same question. They got in a NASA Glenn DC-9 aircraft and found out. The plane can create low gravity for up to 25 seconds by flying in parabolic trajectories at 8000ft. They video taped their tests, and I must say the water looks pretty cool when little or no gravity can touch it.

iPod's dirty secret

iPod has a secret. Some guys recorded a phone call to the iPod helpdesk. They wanted to know what they should do now their iPod's battery stopped working after 18 months. It turns out you can't get or buy a separate new battery. So the advice from the helpdesk was: "Just buy a new iPod".

Looting/Finding

What's the difference between looting something and finding something in New Orleans these days? Apparently it's skin color. Every picture with blacks in them that I have seen were described as looting, and every one with whites in them were described with words like finding or shopping.

I'm not talking about the looters that take entire widescreen TV's with them, cause they ARE looting. I'm talking about the people (both black and white) with groceries in their hands, just trying to survive after a big natural disaster, like in the pictures above.

Taking food and water to survive isn't looting, it isn't when you are white and it isn't when you are black. But for the press it's apparently only not looting when you are white. Something is very wrong in media coverage these days.

Stuff on my cat

Extreme Basketball

I found an excellent movie filled with great basketball shots. Some guys make tons of brilliant shots, one after the other. They score out of every corner, via the wall, while skating by,...
It's hard to explain, you just have to look at it and be amazed.
I do wonder however, how many takes they needed before a shot worked. I'm guessing they were in there for a while :)

Nassa

This is a site with a great mockumentary. It's both very funny and very touching. It tells the story of the forgotten black astronauts of the 50's and 60's.
Their struggle to beat Nasa with their own space project, Nassa, and their eventual succes of being the first people to land on the moon on september 31st,1966.

Very few internet movies can make you laugh and touch you at the same moment, this one can. Go look at it.

optical illusion in color perception

I found a site with 3 very incredible optical illusions. No matter what you do, how you look, or where you look, you think you see different colors. BUT they are all the SAME color. The last one is the best, you think you see one yellow and one purple centerpiece, but the 'yellow' and the 'purple' are EXACTLY the same color. Very weird, very cool.

Rocket car

Want to buy a Turbine Jet Engine powered Toyota MR2? This guy installed some jet engines, a very big front spoiler and other modifications to his car in order to make it a rocket. He states he went 187 miles an hour with it on the salt flats.
I'm thinking this would be great for stop light drag races. But you would have to watch out that the car behind you isn't a convertible when you start, cause I don't think they would like it when they become human toast :D

Stuck in a warm house without air conditioning? This guy found a solution to build your own airco. He directs ice water through a copper tube that's attached to a fan. The cooled copper is cooling the air around and the fan blows the cool air through the room. Very inventive.

Squirting Tom Cruise

Some funny guy squirted water over Tom Cruise's face out of a microphone. This happened while he was giving an interview in London for his new film. The dude thought he was funny, and he was at the moment, but he blew it by acting like a p*ssy when Cruise put him on his place right after the incident. He couldn't do anything more then stumble out a few words and then tried to make a "quick" getaway. Well he tried to walk away after a minute or so. He and his crew got arrested by the police on assault charges and were later released on bail.

Ms Paint

I've seen some amazing drawings being produced with Photoshop, illustrator and painter, but what this guy produced beats 'em all. He spent 500 (five hundred, not a typo) hours on making a drawing with Ms Paint. If you don't know the difference between the previous programs and Ms Paint, then let me tell you it's like racing a Ferrari against a bicycle.
You can always try to make an even better image, but be clear to take a week vacation first ;).

Pets in uniform

This guy uses photoshop to paste your pet's head into a military uniform. Pretty weird if you ask me. That and the fact he isn't good at it. The shading and color tones are way off. Would you pay 20$ for something like that? I hope not. I'm a photoshop intermediate and even I could do it better for only half the price.(Which doesn't mean you have to start sending in pet pictures now :)

Google down

I thought this would never happen, that it was impossible, but it did happen. Google was down for about half an hour. Google.com, froogle, gmail, adsense, adwords, PR ranks,...all gone. Pretty exiting. Some said it was a DNS error, since the ip address still worked, other said google was hacked, since the site redirected to another site for a short while. I hope I'll hear more soon. Chess computer thinking

We've probably all played chess against a computer already. But in those cases the computer just makes his moves after you've done yours. Pretty boring. This is so fun. You have to try to make as much money as possible in 30 days selling lemonade. You can set the price, you have to manage inventory.

There are 2 big changes.

I'm not going to bring the haloscan comment system back, cause they remove comments after 3 months. And the blogger comment system improved a lot while I used haloscan. So, since they don't remove comments, I'm sticking to blogger. I'll try to find a way to bring all your old comments back, btw. I'll probably cut and paste all comments made in the last month or so into the blogger comments. Maybe even 2 or 3 months; we'll see how much free time I find.

Also, I removed all the Bravenet stuff. Hopefully those pop-ups will be gone now.
